Dumb Waiter
A dumb waiter is a movable device designed to transport items such as food or cutlery from floor to floor. It is essentially a small lift, first made to aid servants carrying items from the kitchen to the dining room, which was usually on a higher level.
It solves the problem of transport between floors, and is essentially an item of convenience. Precious time can be saved which may have been unnecessarily lost carrying items from one level to another. Dumb waiters can be a cost-effective method of streamlining certain processes in a restaurant or hotel for example. The lifts are relatively cheap and can be installed to suit their location with little difficulty.
Imagine a situation in a hotel where laundry has to be carried between floors. This can take time and effort, even if using a passenger lift to carry items. The installation of a dumb waiter can efficiently carry loads of laundry, for example, to save time for cleaning staff. The standard dumb waiter can carry 150kg of weight, though it is possible for them to carry more. This capacity is more than enough for the backdrop of a busy hotel; it may not be an essential installation but it is clear how effective it can be in increasing efficiency and facilitating mundane tasks.
